Commercial Businesses
The Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) Prevention Division oversees inspections to all businesses within the City of Tallahassee and Leon County.
The Prevention Division has nine full-time inspectors that cover nine zones in our community. Fire Safety Inspectors protect the general public through fire prevention education and annual fire safety inspections.
Inspectors visit hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, schools, daycare facilities, recreational centers, apartment and condominium buildings, industrial and manufacturing facilities and more to ensure that state and local fire codes are being met. They document code violations and deficiencies in buildings and work with building owners to have corrections made within an allotted amount of time. During these inspections, inspectors educate business owners, managers and property owners regarding safety issues.
The Plans Review Division consists of three certified civilian personnel, each responsible for a specialized area. These areas include site plan review, building plan review and final inspections. They review construction plans and submittals; inspect all new commercial buildings and renovation projects to determine compliance with fire code requirements; inspect all new fire protection, fire detection and fire alarm systems; and more. All commercial buildings must have a final fire inspection prior to being issued a certificate of occupancy.
