Tallahassee Senior Services Honors Eight Extraordinary Citizens

2023 Silver Stars Shine with Optimism and Service to Others

May 05, 2023

Some of Tallahassee's most accomplished seniors will be honored at the 21st annual Silver Stars Gala, held on May 18. Organized by the City of Tallahassee Senior Services, Silver Stars is the community's premier senior recognition event.

"Silver Stars exemplify active aging. They selflessly contribute to the community through volunteer work and demonstrate the benefit of lifelong learning," Mayor John Dailey said.

This year, eight Silver Stars will be recognized for their positive outlook, active lifestyle and dedication to others since the age of 60.

The 2023 Silver Stars award recipients are:

  • Marina Brown is an author, artist, journalist, ping pong player, world traveler and former ballet dancer who demonstrates that you should always continue learning new things.
  • Jane Greene, age 84, is a retired nurse who has volunteered for more than 17 years in the Tallahassee Senior Center's Health Suite, an active member of her neighborhood's homeowner's association and a longtime member of the Senior Singers group.
  • Jim Hinson, age 80, is a proud father and grandfather, model ship builder, violinist in the Thomasville Road Baptist Church orchestra and 19-year Tallahassee Senior Center volunteer who currently assists with data entry.
  • Henry Lowery, age 74, is a retired Marine who volunteers at the Tallahassee National Cemetery, American Legion, local chapter of Vietnam Veterans and Big Bend Hospice.
  • Dr. Charles Moore, age 89, is a retired surgeon who stays active volunteering on the board of MEDASSIST, pursuing creative hobbies and working several part-time jobs.
  • Gladys Roann-Watson, age 75, is a lifelong advocate for children whose career in public health and subsequent volunteer service has benefitted numerous youth in Jefferson County and surrounding communities.
  • Jill Sandler, age 79, longtime member of the Tallahassee Senior Center Advisory Council, serves on the Health Services Committee at Westminster Oaks while staying active with her dogs, pickleball, mahjongg and water aerobics.
  • Freida Travis, age 79, has used her intellect and kind heart to improve the lives of others throughout her life, from guiding EMS programs though the accreditation process during her career to volunteering at the Tallahassee Senior Center in retirement.
